At a glance

Guerlain is a Paris perfume house founded in 1828 by Pierre-Francois Pascal Guerlain, who made custom fragrances with his sons Aime and Gabriel. After his death in 1864 Aime became master perfumer while Gabriel ran the business, and Aime's Jicky (1889) is widely regarded as the first modern perfume. Gabriel's son Jacques became the third master perfumer, creating Mouchoir de Monsieur (1904), Apres l'Ondee (1906), L'Heure Bleue (1912), Mitsouko (1919), Shalimar (1925) and Vol de Nuit (1933). His grandson Jean-Paul Guerlain, who helped him on Ode in 1955, was the last family perfumer; Thierry Wasser became the in-house perfumer in 2008, and LVMH bought the family house in 1994.
