Created by Jacques Guerlain, Mouchoir de Monsieur (Monsieur's Handkerchief) takes its name from the period practice of scenting a gentleman's pocket handkerchief rather than the skin directly, a common method of fragrance application before cologne splashes and later sprays became standard. The composition opens on lavender, bergamot, and lemon, moves into a heart of neroli and orris, and closes on a base of vanilla, civet, tonka bean, and musk, structurally a close cousin to Jicky, sharing that fragrance's lavender-coumarin-civet skeleton but built as an explicitly masculine counterpart. The animalic civet note gives it a warm, slightly indolic sensuality beneath its formal lavender-citrus surface, a combination that was considered daringly intimate for its time despite the fragrance's buttoned-up, gentlemanly name. It is frequently discussed alongside Jicky as one of Guerlain's two great fin-de-siecle fougere-adjacent compositions, the pair together illustrating how the same coumarin-lavender-civet structure could be styled toward either gender through subtle shifts in balance. Though less famous today than some of Guerlain's later 20th-century releases, it remains a favorite among perfume historians for its clear lineage back to Jicky and Fougere Royale.
