The synthesis of vanillin

Haarmann and Tiemann synthesized vanillin from coniferin, patenting the process in 1874. It made vanilla's dominant aroma compound affordable at industrial scale for the first time, and the company Haarmann founded on it (later Haarmann & Reimer) became one of the industry's foundational fragrance and flavor houses.

The synthesis of ionone

Tiemann and Krüger synthesized ionone — the violet-scented compound — via aldol condensation of citral and acetone. Before this, violet-flower oil was among the most expensive materials in perfumery; the synthetic version made violet and iris-type notes viable in mainstream fragrance for the first time.

The discovery of synthetic musk

Baur discovered nitro musk compounds by accident while researching more effective forms of TNT, patenting the process in Germany the same year (DRP No. 47599). It launched the entire category of synthetic musks that perfumery still relies on, since natural musk (from the musk deer) was scarce, expensive, and is now restricted on animal-welfare grounds.
