Created by Jean-Paul Guerlain, Habit Rouge, Red Coat, opens on bergamot, lemon, rosewood, and basil, moves through an elaborate heart of sandalwood, carnation, rose, patchouli, cedar, and cinnamon, and closes on amber, moss, leather, benzoin, labdanum, and vanilla. Its name references the traditional red hunting coat worn in fox hunting, evoking a specifically aristocratic, equestrian French masculinity. Habit Rouge is widely regarded as one of the first masculine orientals, applying Guerlain's Shalimar-adjacent vanilla-amber warmth to a men's fragrance decades before that combination became common.
