Patchouli

What it smells like

Patchouli smells earthy, damp and woody, like rich soil, dried leaves and dark chocolate, with a slightly camphorous, leathery edge. Fresh from the plant it can seem green and rough, but the aged oil used in perfume becomes deeper, smoother and almost sweet. It has a strong, lingering presence that can feel bohemian, mysterious and sensual. Perfumers use it as a base note to anchor florals, add depth to woods and give chypres and orientals their earthy backbone.
