Liu is a floral aldehyde created by Jacques Guerlain in 1929, named for the young slave in Puccini's opera Turandot who would rather die than reveal her love for Prince Calaf, and said to have been a gift for his wife Andree Bouffet. It opens on aldehydes, neroli and bergamot, with jasmine, rose and rosemary at the heart over iris, vanilla, amber and woods. The original presentation was a black Baccarat tabatiere bottle designed by Raymond Guerlain, inspired by eighteenth-century Chinese tea caddies.
