Peau d'Espagne(1910)

A second interpretation of the historic Peau d'Espagne, Spanish Skin, leather genre, this one from Francois Coty rather than Santa Maria Novella, following a similar bergamot-neroli opening, a rose-and-clove heart, and a leather-musk-amber-civet base. That two major houses released fragrances under the same historic genre name within roughly a year of each other illustrates how Peau d'Espagne functioned less as a proprietary composition and more as a recognized perfumery category, like Eau de Cologne, that multiple perfumers could interpret independently. Coty's version follows the same essential structure as the earlier Santa Maria Novella rendition, reconstructing the Renaissance-era practice of perfuming fine leather with a spiced floral-animalic blend. The rose-clove pairing over a civet-leather base produces a warm, slightly spicy sensuality distinct from the simpler citrus colognes dominating much of the era's output. It reflects Coty's willingness to work within established historic genres alongside his more original creations.
