Created by Anne Flipo for Yves Saint Laurent, Libre opens on lavender, mandarin, and blackcurrant bud, moves through a heart of orange blossom and jasmine, and closes on vanilla, musk, ambergris, and cedarwood. Its title, Free, and unusual pairing of masculine lavender with feminine orange blossom and vanilla, evokes themes of liberation and gender fluidity, and it became one of the most commercially significant feminine fragrance launches of its era, praised for successfully modernizing the classical lavender-vanilla fougere-oriental structure for a contemporary women's audience.
