Selection Verte(1901)

A green, herbal composition from Creed's early-1900s catalog, opening on bergamot and green notes, moving through an herbal heart, and closing on a base of vetiver and musk. Selection Verte, green selection, signals its intent plainly: this is built around the sharp, chlorophyll-like green materials that were becoming newly available to perfumers around the turn of the century, including galbanum and other bitter, leafy extracts that could evoke crushed stems and cut grass rather than flowers. Vetiver, the earthy, smoky root material from Haiti, Java, or Reunion, anchors the base and reinforces the green-and-herbal direction rather than pulling toward the sweeter amber or musk bases common in florals of the same period. This green-herbal register was still relatively novel in mainstream perfumery at the turn of the century, predating the more famous green florals of the mid-20th century by several decades. It represents a more restrained, austere counterpart to Creed's showier floral and imperial-themed compositions from the same era.
