Created by Frank Voelkl for Le Labo, Santal 33 opens on cardamom, iris, and violet, moves through a heart of papyrus and Ambrox, and closes on sandalwood, leather, musk, and cedarwood. Its smoky, leathery sandalwood accord, built around a synthetic Ambrox base rather than natural sandalwood alone, became one of the most culturally significant and widely recognized unisex fragrances of the 2010s, its ubiquity in hotels, boutiques, and social media making it a genuine cultural phenomenon and one of the best-selling niche fragrances ever released.
