Named for May Day, the traditional French holiday on which sprigs of lily of the valley (muguet) are given as tokens of good luck, this Houbigant composition opens on bergamot and green notes before a heart doubling down on the muguet theme with both lily of the valley and muguet listed together, closing on musk and woods. Lily of the valley has no extractable natural essential oil, since the flower's delicate scent is destroyed by steam distillation and solvent extraction alike, meaning any lily-of-the-valley note in perfumery, including this one, is necessarily a synthetic reconstruction built from materials like hydroxycitronellal and other aldehydic florals that became available to perfumers in the late 19th century. The fragrance's May Day naming ties it directly to a beloved French seasonal tradition that continues to this day, when muguet sprigs are still sold on Paris street corners every first of May. As a Houbigant release from the house's most creatively active period, bookended by Fougere Royale and Le Parfum Ideal, it reflects the breadth of the house's output beyond its two most historically celebrated compositions.
