Created by Henri Robert for Chanel, No. 19 opens on galbanum, bergamot, and neroli, moves through a heart of iris, rose, ylang-ylang, and lily of the valley, and closes on vetiver, oakmoss, leather, and musk. Named for Coco Chanel's birthday, August 19th, it was reportedly one of the last fragrances she personally approved before her death in 1971. Its galbanum-driven green opening, following the genre Germaine Cellier had established with Vent Vert, paired with a cool, aloof iris heart, produced a famously austere, sharp-edged floral. No. 19 remains widely regarded as one of the definitive green florals in perfumery history.
