Narcisse Noir(1911)

Caron · Ernest Daltroff · Floral

At a glance

Created by Ernest Daltroff for Caron, Narcisse Noir, Black Narcissus, is a rich orange-blossom-and-jasmine oriental built on bergamot and orange blossom in the opening, a heart of jasmine, narcissus, and rose, and a base of musk, civet, sandalwood, and vanilla. Despite its name, the fragrance is built more around orange blossom and jasmine than narcissus flower itself, with narcisse understood by perfume historians as evoking the flower's exotic, faintly indolic character rather than serving as a literal dominant note. The civet-and-musk base gives it a warm, animalic sensuality that was considered daring for its time, part of a broader early-20th-century trend toward richer, more overtly sensual orientals following the template Coty had helped establish with Ambre Antique and L'Origan. Its title later inspired the 1947 Powell and Pressburger film Black Narcissus, though the film and fragrance are otherwise unconnected beyond the shared evocative name. Narcisse Noir remains one of Caron's most celebrated early creations and helped establish Daltroff's reputation as one of the era's most accomplished perfumers, still referenced today as a benchmark of pre-war oriental-floral construction.

Did you know? This scent's civet note is a heavily diluted trace of a substance that smells overwhelming and fecal at full strength. Read the full story →
