Le Parfum Ideal(1900)

Houbigant · Paul Parquet · Floral

At a glance

Paul Parquet's other landmark creation for Houbigant, released eighteen years after Fougere Royale, Le Parfum Ideal is a refined multi-floral built on bergamot and neroli, a rich heart of rose, jasmine, lily of the valley, and orris, and a warm base of sandalwood, musk, vanilla, and tonka bean. It is frequently cited by perfume historians as one of the most influential and widely imitated feminine fragrances of the Belle Epoque, its lily-of-the-valley-and-orris heart over a vanillic base establishing a template that countless early-20th-century florals would echo. Where Fougere Royale had demonstrated what synthetic coumarin could do for a masculine composition, Le Parfum Ideal showed the same principle applied to a soft, powdery feminine register, combining natural florals with synthetic vanillin and coumarin to achieve a smoothness natural materials alone could not produce. Houbigant's reputation as innovators of the coumarin-driven modern perfume rests as much on this fragrance as on Fougere Royale itself, even though the masculine fern family gets more of the historical credit. Though largely eclipsed in fame by later Houbigant releases and by rival houses in the following decades, it remains a touchstone for understanding how ideal femininity was constructed in scent at the turn of the 20th century.
