Femme(1933)

Created by Edmond Roudnitska for Rochas, Femme, Woman, opens on plum and bergamot, moves through a heart of rose, jasmine, and cinnamon, and closes on oakmoss, leather, patchouli, and amber. Roudnitska, who would go on to create numerous celebrated fragrances across his career, built the composition around an unusually rich plum note, reportedly inspired in part by the scent of his wife's fur coat, giving the fragrance a fruity-leathery sensuality distinctive among the era's chypre-adjacent compositions. Its plum-patchouli-leather structure represented a genuinely novel combination for its time, influencing the fruity-chypre genre that would develop further through the following decades. Femme helped establish Marcel Rochas's fashion house as a serious perfumery player and remains one of Roudnitska's most historically significant early creations, predating his later celebrated work on Dior's Eau Sauvage and Diorella.
