Cuir de Russie(1924)

Created by Ernest Beaux for Chanel, Cuir de Russie, Russian Leather, opens on aldehydes, bergamot, and orange, moves through a heart of jasmine, iris, and ylang-ylang, and closes on a base built around leather, birch tar, and musk. Birch tar, historically used to treat Russian leather during tanning, gives the composition its distinctive smoky, tarry leather character, a technique perfume historians trace back to genuine 19th-century Russian leather-working practice. Beaux himself had worked in Russia before the revolution and drew on that background for several Chanel compositions of this period, making the leather theme here a more historically grounded reference than the more generic exoticism common elsewhere in 1920s perfumery. The aldehydic opening situates it within the same technical family as No. 5 and No. 22, applying the material to a considerably darker, more assertive structure than either of its floral siblings. It remains one of Chanel's most historically significant leather compositions and a frequently cited reference point for the smoky-leather genre broadly.
