4711 Eau de Cologne(1792)

Muhlens / 4711 · Wilhelm Muhlens · Citrus

At a glance

Wilhelm Muhlens founded this cologne house in 1792 in Cologne, and legend holds that a French duke gave him the water's original recipe as a wedding gift, describing it as an 'aqua mirabilis' or wonder-water. The fragrance itself is a textbook Eau de Cologne: bergamot, lemon, and orange top notes over a neroli-petitgrain-rosemary heart, finished with musk and oakmoss, crisp, citrus-forward, and worn as a bracing splash rather than a lingering scent. The house took its enduring name, '4711', from the street address assigned to the shop during the French occupation of Cologne under Napoleon, when the city's building numbering system was overhauled and street names were briefly abolished. That address became so associated with the fragrance that Muhlens adopted it as the brand name outright, and the numbered blue-and-gold bottle has changed remarkably little since. Continuously produced since the 1790s, it stands among the handful of fragrances that can claim an unbroken production history spanning more than two centuries.
