The World's Most Expensive Wood Only Exists Because the Tree Got Infected
A healthy Aquilaria tree is odorless and worthless to perfumers. Oud — one of the priciest raw materials on earth — only forms after the tree is wounded or infected, as a defensive reaction.
Oud, also called agarwood, is one of the most expensive raw materials in the entire fragrance and incense trade. Small vials of oud oil can cost more per ounce than gold. But here's the part that surprises people: the tree that produces it isn't naturally fragrant at all.
A healthy tree makes none of it
Aquilaria trees, native to Southeast and South Asia, grow plain, pale, odorless wood under normal conditions. Agarwood — the dense, dark, deeply fragrant resin-soaked wood that gives oud its name — only forms after the tree is wounded, whether by insects, fungal infection, physical damage, or disease. The tree responds to that stress by producing an aromatic resin as a defense mechanism, and it's that infected, resin-saturated wood that gets harvested, aged, and distilled into oud oil.
An untouched, uninfected Aquilaria tree standing in the same forest is essentially worthless for this purpose. The value is created entirely by the tree's stress response — not by the tree itself.
Why that makes it so rare (and so faked)
In the wild, only a small percentage of Aquilaria trees ever naturally develop the infection severely enough to produce commercially useful agarwood, and it can take years for the resin to accumulate once infection starts. That scarcity is exactly why genuine wild oud commands such extreme prices — and why the market is notorious for adulteration and synthetic substitutes sold as the real thing.
The modern workaround
Because waiting on nature is unreliable, agarwood plantations now commonly inoculate healthy trees deliberately — drilling, wounding, or infecting them on purpose to trigger the same defensive resin response artificially, cutting the wait down from an uncertain wild event to a managed, if still slow, agricultural process.
