A highly concentrated aromatic extract obtained by solvent extraction, typically from delicate flowers (jasmine, tuberose) that can't survive steam distillation intact.
Ch. 14 →A specific combination of materials, in specific proportions, that stops smelling like its individual parts and reads as one new, unified impression.
Ch. 24 →A reactive chemical functional group responsible for the sparkling, soapy-metallic quality in fragrances like Chanel No. 5, not a single material but a whole class of them.
Ch. 16 →A material required to be declared on packaging in many markets because of documented, real skin-sensitization risk in some users.
Ch. 19 →The slowest-evaporating layer of a fragrance's pyramid, the part that lasts longest on skin, usually woods, resins, musks, or amber materials.
Ch. 3 →The chemistry and process work, testing, blending adjustments, reference standards, that keeps every production run of a perfume smelling the same as the last.
Ch. 55 →A thin, absorbent paper strip dipped in a fragrance or raw material and smelled directly, rather than applying it to skin, the standard evaluation tool.
Ch. 31 →An aroma chemical a fragrance house develops and keeps exclusive to its own client formulas, rather than selling to competitors.

Ch. 14 →The final stage of a fragrance's evolution on skin, once the top and heart notes have faded and the base notes dominate what's left.
Ch. 18 →A historic cold-fat extraction method for flowers too delicate to survive distillation, the flower's scent is absorbed directly into purified fat, then washed out with alcohol.

Ch. 42 →Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry: the real lab technique used to separate and identify a fragrance's individual chemical components, including in headspace analysis.
Ch. 31 →A fragrance family built on edible-smelling notes, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, praline, a genuinely modern category with no real 19th-century precedent.
Ch. 21 →Capturing the actual volatile compounds a living, uncut plant releases into the air around it, often meaningfully different from what distilling or extracting the cut plant yields.
Historic Texts →The layer of a fragrance that emerges as the top notes fade, usually florals or spices, and often what a perfume is 'about' once it settles in.
Ch. 3 →The International Fragrance Association, the industry's own voluntary safety body, publishing concentration limits and restrictions for individual fragrance materials.
Prohibited materials →A single aroma chemical separated out from a natural essential oil, for instance, citral isolated from lemongrass oil, rather than a fully synthetic invention.
Ch. 17 →Letting a finished fragrance compound rest and blend, sometimes for weeks, before it's bottled, real time the formula needs to fully integrate.
Ch. 30 →A synthetic molecule that is chemically identical to one which also occurs in nature, as opposed to a wholly novel synthetic with no natural counterpart.
Ch. 17 →A broad scent category (floral, woody, oriental/amber, chypre, fougère, and more) used to classify and compare fragrances, several competing classification systems exist.
Ch. 21 →A warm fragrance family built on resins, vanilla, and amber-type bases, one of the oldest structural families in Western perfumery.
Ch. 23 →The wall or desk of hundreds of labeled raw materials a perfumer works directly from while composing, named for its resemblance to a pipe organ's keyboard.
Ch. 27 →Describes a material, unrefined cold-pressed bergamot oil is the classic example, that reacts with UV light on skin to cause burns or discoloration.
Ch. 19 →The unusually strong, involuntary link between smell and long-term emotional memory, named after the scene in Proust's In Search of Lost Time.
Ch. 2 →Changing an existing fragrance's formula, usually to comply with new safety regulation as materials are restricted, not (as commonly assumed) to cut costs.
Ch. 11 →A substance capable of triggering an allergic skin reaction, typically with repeated exposure, the scientific basis behind most IFRA restrictions.
Ch. 19 →A trained group of human testers used to formally evaluate a fragrance's character and performance before it ships commercially.
Ch. 58 →French for 'wake', how far, and how noticeably, a fragrance projects into the air off the wearer's skin, distinct from how long it lasts.
Ch. 37 →How long a material's scent physically persists on skin or fabric, the real property behind loose talk about a perfume's 'longevity.'
Ch. 18 →The commercial document a brand hands a fragrance house, describing what a new perfume needs to achieve in the market, not a chemical spec.
