Created by Jacques Polge for Chanel, Coco opens on mandarin, bergamot, and coriander, moves through a heart of rose, jasmine, cloves, and cinnamon, and closes on opoponax, labdanum, sandalwood, and vanilla. Named for Coco Chanel herself, more than a decade after her death, it offered a dense, spiced oriental quite different from the house's earlier aldehydic and green florals, reflecting Polge's own distinct compositional voice as Chanel's in-house perfumer following Henri Robert. Coco is widely regarded as one of the richest, most opulent fragrances Chanel released in the 1980s, its clove-cinnamon warmth situating it closer to Opium and Cinnabar than to No. 5 or No. 19.
