There's a Perfume Industry Built Around Making Things Smell Like a Dead Body

Synthetic decomposition scent isn't a novelty, it's a real, chemically engineered product category used to train cadaver-detection dogs, built around the same compounds, cadaverine and putrescine, that give decomposition its smell.

Bottled decay, on purpose

Cadaverine and putrescine are two of the compounds produced during the breakdown of amino acids in decomposing tissue, and both have been isolated and bottled as commercial training aids for human-remains-detection dogs. One documented product, marketed as Pseudo™ Scent II, is formulated from a specific blend of putrescine, cadaverine, and two related compounds in defined proportions.

Real, but imperfect

Chemists who've analyzed these synthetic training scents against actual decomposition odor have found them to be oversimplified, real decomposition involves a much wider and more variable chemical signature than any bottled product currently replicates, which is part of why cadaver-dog training increasingly also uses real donated tissue samples alongside the synthetic aids.
