Created by Michel Morsetti for Caron, Poivre, Pepper, opens on clove, carnation, pepper, and red pepper, moves through an elaborate heart of cloves, geranium, rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and tuberose, and closes on oakmoss, opoponax, sandalwood, and vetiver. Its aggressive pepper-and-clove opening, unusually spicy even by the standards of Caron's own carnation-forward Bellodgia, made it one of the boldest, most challenging spiced florals of the mid-1950s. The composition's sheer material density, combining seven heart notes alone, reflects Morsetti's continuation of Caron's tradition of richly layered, maximalist construction established by founder Ernest Daltroff decades earlier.
